Background of the study
Environmental activism has emerged as a powerful catalyst for policy change, particularly in areas where ecological degradation directly impacts public health. In Rivers State, grassroots movements and environmental campaigns have increasingly mobilized communities to advocate for cleaner air, water, and a safer environment. Activists use social media, public demonstrations, and community outreach to raise awareness about pollution, deforestation, and industrial hazards. Their efforts have prompted government agencies to reconsider and revise public health policies to better address environmental risks. The link between environmental quality and public health is well documented; exposure to pollutants can lead to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and other chronic conditions. Environmental activism thus plays a critical role in driving legislative and regulatory reforms aimed at protecting public health. This study evaluates the effect of environmental activism on public health policies in Rivers State, investigating how activist-driven initiatives have influenced policy decisions and improved health outcomes, as well as the challenges faced in sustaining these movements (Chukwu, 2023; Adebola, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite vigorous environmental activism in Rivers State, translating public pressure into effective public health policies remains challenging. Activists often face obstacles such as political resistance, limited funding, and competing economic interests that prioritize industrial growth over environmental protection. As a result, many public health policies fall short of adequately addressing the environmental hazards that affect community health. This study seeks to examine the extent to which environmental activism has influenced policy changes and to identify the factors that limit the efficacy of these movements in safeguarding public health.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of environmental activism on public health policies in Rivers State.
To identify challenges that hinder effective policy implementation driven by activism.
To recommend strategies for enhancing the influence of environmental activism on public health reforms.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the interplay between environmental activism and public health, providing insights for policymakers and activists to better align health policies with ecological concerns. The findings will contribute to more effective public health strategies that mitigate environmental risks (Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to environmental activism and public health policy in Rivers State. It excludes broader environmental issues not directly related to health. Limitations include variability in activism efforts and political influences.
